Specialising in a range of evidence based approaches to mental health and well-being
My name is Dr Chris Shields and I am a Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist. I have been working within adult mental health services within the NHS for over 10 years and have experience and training in a range of evidence-based psychological approaches. While I have extensive experience of offering a range of therapeutic approaches (including CBT, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Schema Therapy and others), all my work tends to be psychodynamically informed. My therapeutic approach involves exploring the impact of life experiences, including childhood experiences, on your "inner world" and your relationship with yourself. It all explores how early life experiences and relationships can continue to impact on current relationships and difficulties. This can only be done in a safe, non-judgemental environment and open space - which is what therapy with me would represent.
At Shields Psychology, we believe that every client is unique and deserves a personalized treatment plan. I will work closely with you to develop a therapeutic approach that suits your individual needs, goals, and preferences. I use evidence-based practises and regularly review progress to ensure you are getting the most effective treatment possible.
Supervision - As a highly experienced and qualified Clinical Psychologist, I am in a position to offer supervision to peers and newly qualified therapists.
Reflective Practice - Throughout my career to date, I have been involved in facilitating a range of reflective practice groups using a variety of reflective models. Reflective practice within therapeutic services, schools and other organisations is something that can really add to the quality of work as well as to staff morale.
Sports Psychology - Before entering the world of clinical psychology and therapy, I completed a PhD in interventions related to sports psychology. I have also lectured in Sports Psychology at the University of Southampton. I am, therefore, in a position to be able to apply a range of psychological interventions and approaches to help athletes improve performance within a range of sports.
Training/Teaching - Throughout my career I have provided training and teaching to a range of professions and students within a number of UK Universities and organisations on a variety of psychological topics. Please get in touch and I can develop bespoke training for you or your organisation.
